What is compounding?

The pharmacy art of compounding is the method of preparing medications to meet the unique needs of prescribers and patients. Compounding pharmacists can play a major role in the health care setting because of their ability to help solve the most challenging patient problems.

For example, many patients are allergic to common fillers, dyes, binders, and other additives that are part of mass-produced medications. In addition, many medications are available only in limited strengths and dosage forms. Working with physicians, innovative compounding pharmacists are continually providing solutions to medication dosing problems, meeting patient needs, and providing improved quality of life.

How can compounding benefit you?

  • Customized dosing - patient-specific and individualized to meet any dosing problems (varying strengths, sizes, and dosage forms)
  • Dye-free, preservative free, and alcohol free formulations available
  • Custom flavoring - helps make certain medications easier to administer (i.e. veterinary and pediatric flavoring)
  • Provide for unavailable, unformulated, and discontinued items
  • Increases the patient/doctor/pharmacist relationship
